Doing your own wedding makeup? Here are 9 of my personal top tips for perfecting your face for your special day…
MINIMAL SKINCARE
Don’t use too much skincare the morning of your big day. If your skin is prepped with too many products your make up will look great initially but isn’t going to last. Take your time with your evening routine the night before adding lots of moisture to ensure a hydrated healthy base for the wedding day.
AVOID SPF
Although most foundations now have photo friendly SPF, I would still be cautious of using SPF in any base products. SPF can cause flashback in photos (the reason your face can look 10 times lighter than your body in photos and not in real life!!) . If your wedding is in the sunshine and you need to protect your skin opt for a fine mist SPF setting spray like this one which will be much more lightweight.
BRIGHTEN THAT UNDER EYE
Consider investing in a corrector to go underneath your concealer for a brighter looking under eye. Photographs can pick up any darkness under the eyes and sometimes concealer alone just doesn’t cut it. A pink toned corrector is great to disguise blue/purple tones whilst a peach toned corrector will counteract any brown/green tones.
DON’T FORGET TO SET
Setting makeup is something I never usually do. However for makeup that you want to last all day powder is essential. I don’t use it on my cheeks I just apply a light dusting across my forehead, down my nose and around my mouth/chin. I prefer Translucent Loose Powder for bridal makeup as it’s finely milled and find it sits better on the skin giving a more polished finished. Pressed Powder is great to keep in your handbag throughout the day to touch up if you are someone that gets excess shine throughout the day.
BLUSH BLUSH BLUSH!
I meet so many women that say “I don’t like blusher I just use my bronzer”. Bronzer is great to add warmth across the complexion but when it comes to a fresh looking face you can’t beat a hint of peachy pink blush to brighten you up. Apply to the apples of the cheeks after bronzer and highlighter.
BLACK LINER IS A MUST
Eye liner comes in so many different shades but nothing quite cuts it like black liner! Not only does black make your eyes pop the most contrasting against the whites of your eyes… a slick of black liner works wonders on your lash line creating the illusion of fuller thicker lashes. If you really don’t feel comfortable in black just use it on your upper waterline scribbled into the lashes and then apply your colour of choice onto the visible lid. This will give added oomph to a coloured liner.
TO LASH OR NOT TO LASH
I personally will be wearing strip lashes on my wedding day. My lashes are super fine and don’t have much length so strip lashes for me are a must and I love the fullness they give. I have been a strip lash wearer for years so be mindful if you are not a lash wearer that you need to get used to them before your big day otherwise it can feel uncomfortable. If you don’t feel comfortable in a strip other options include individuals which are a lot lighter to wear (they just don’t give as much fullness) or semi permanents (have them done a couple of times before your big day if you can). If you are blessed with naturally quite long lashes you could opt for an LVL Lash Lift instead which actually looks like you a wearing falsies the results are that good!
LAYER YOUR LIPPIE
Get yourself a matching liner, lipstick and gloss for the day. Your lipstick is the one thing you are going to have to reapply the most during the day so by layering textures it will minimize the amount of applications. Start with pencil to outline and then colour in the full lip with it – don’t prep with lip balm make sure you’ve smothered your lips in it the night before. Then apply a light layer of lipstick, blot onto a tissue, and repeat your lipstick. If you want to add a little gloss then pressed it through the centre of the lips to create a fuller looking hydrated pout. Avoid blending gloss across the full lip as a glossy finish wears off much quicker!
YOU DO YOU
I can’t stress enough the importance of feeling yourself on your wedding day! Take what everyone says (including my tips above) with a pinch of salt and go with whatever look makes you feel your best! Whether that’s a blue smokey eye, a red lip paired with a top knot, a tinted moisturiser and lip balm… you do you and your confidence will shine through!
