The season for cosying up by the fire, living in chunky knitwear, and giving our drier more sensitive skin some much needed TLC!
With having a combination skin type myself, I get overly excited about stepping up my routine this time of year! Autumn/Winter weather allows me to be able to layer my skincare, and use more nourishing products that my skin would find too much in spring/summer.
Just like you switch up your wardrobe seasonally, you should also switch up your skincare/makeup routine. Here are some tips for escaping that winter dehydration and holding onto that glow.
Exfoliate
As the temperature drops outside there is less moisture in the air, and inside we are surrounded by the dry heat from central heating. This massively dehydrates our skin, and a dehydrated skin holds onto a lot more dead skin cells than usual.
Use an exfoliator 2 to 3 times a week to remove those excess skin cells. This will not only leave a brighter looking skin, but also boost the performance of your moisturiser and the staying power of your foundation due to the smoother texture of your skin.
One simple step, triple the benefits!
I couldn’t live without my Bobbi Brown Buffing Grains! A jar of super fine natural grains that you simply sprinkle into your cleanser to create your own natural exfoliant.
TIP : Mix some buffing grains into your lip balm and use as a lip scrub. A must for Bold Lipstick Season!
Invest in a face oil
A face oil is one of the dreamiest products you can have in your autumn/winter skincare wardrobe, it instantly improves your skin condition no matter what your skin type! Face oil intensively nourishes a drier skin type, whilst balancing the oil production of an oilier skin.
Cleanse and tone as usual, and then add your oil as an overnight treatment alone or layer with your moisturiser if you’re on the drier side for extra moisture. My skin always feels at its best the morning after sleeping in face oil!!
TIP : Press face oil onto your cheeks over the top of your makeup for a plumper more glowing finish instantly.
Switch up your base makeup formulas
The lightweight formulas you use in the summer, most definitely need stepping up when it comes to the colder months of winter….
Foundation – Go for something slightly fuller coverage than you would usually go for. During the winter our skin is a lot fairer, therefore imperfections are more visible so a higher coverage is needed for that even base.
When it comes to foundation, don’t forget to get a winter shade match. A woman’s skin tone changes around 4 times a year so make sure you are purchasing the correct shade.
I LOVE : Skin Foundation Stick in Shade 3.5 Warm Beige. 31 shades available.
Blush – Cream blusher all the way!! There is nothing prettier than a fresh pop of creamy colour on your cheeks giving added hydration and glow.
Layer it on top of your foundation to the apples of your cheeks with either your fingers or foundation brush.
If your skin is on the oilier side, you may prefer using a powder blush first then add a hint of cream blush on top in a similar shade. This will still give you the glow, but layering with the powder blush will ensure your blush stays put for longer.
A few blush combo suggestions as pictured below : from left to right
Peach – Clementine Powder / Calypso Coral Cream Blush
Pink – Pale Pink Powder / Pale Pink Cream Blush My winter favourite!!
Nude – Nude Peach Powder / Uber Beige Cream Blush
I hope you’ve found these points useful, comment below anything you love to do or use on your skin in the winter?!
After writing this post, I’m off to exfoliate and cover my skin in face oil before bed!
Have a great week,
